Mackay was known as 'the heartbeat' of the successful double-winning Tottenham Hotspur side of 1961. He played 268 games for Spurs and scored 42 goals for the club. During his nine years with the club he helped Tottenham win three FA Cup's (1961, 1962, 1967), the 1961 Football League First Division, three FA Charity Shields (1961, 1962, 1967) and the European Cup Winner's Cup (1967).
