According to a legend from the 19th century, a skilled cook from the Premonstratensian monastery in Teplá was behind the creation of spa wafers. When he was once tasked with preparing a dessert for the guests, he thought of using the baking trays for baking the guests. He improved the simple dough by adding sugar and milk and sprinkled a delicious mixture of nuts, sugar, cinnamon and other fine spices between the baked wafers. He then baked the wafers together.
